Spring School for Postgraduates and Young Scientists: Open Science Practices and Academic Writing as Tools for Transforming Science

On 27-28 May, the Spring School for Postgraduate Students and Young Scientists ‘Academic Writing and Open Research Practices’ was held, organised by the Cooperation Group of Academic Libraries of Universities – members of the Alliance of Ukrainian Universities. The event brought together over 170 participants from 19 Ukrainian universities in a mixed format.

The school became a space for improving research competence, getting acquainted with modern bibliographic tools, open science platforms, and issues of academic integrity. The School was coordinated by the M. Maksymovych Scientific Library of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with the support of the Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies Department and the Council of Young Scientists of the National University of Kyiv.

At the opening of the event, the Vice-Rector for Research of the Kyiv National University Hanna Tolstanova and the First Vice-Rector of UCU Yaroslav Prytula stressed the importance of open science, academic visibility of young researchers, and support for their scientific activities.

The first day was dedicated to academic writing and working with research profiles and bibliographies. The students learned how to ensure reproducibility of research, properly document surveys, work with bibliography managers (including Mendeley), and select journals for publication.

The second day covered the topics of open science, scientific data, integrity, and research tools. In particular, the topics included:

  • writing qualitative articles based on surveys (Maryna Zhenchenko, Scientific Library named after M. Maksymovych Scientific Library of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv);
  • use of bibliographic managers (Yana Fandikova, Library of Sumy State University);
  • selection of a quality journal (Iryna Kuchma, EIFL);
  • creation and maintenance of a scientific profile (Oleg Shylyuk, Scientific Library of Yuriy Fedkovych National University of Kyiv);
  • academic integrity and AI challenges (Yulia Tyurya, NTU “Dnipro Polytechnic”);
  • preparation of FAIR datasets (Olena Gerasymova, Scientific Library of M. Maksymovych Scientific Library of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv);
  • research metrics and analytics (Oleh Pasko, Ukrainian Catholic University);
  • open mapping tools (Orysia Vira, Ukrainian Catholic University).

Particular attention was paid to the role of libraries in supporting open science, increasing researchers’ information literacy, and disseminating innovative practices. In their speeches, representatives of the Maksymovych Scientific Library emphasised the need to adapt library support to the needs of a modern researcher.

We sincerely thank the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the opportunity to work and study.

We thank the speakers for their valuable experience and all participants for their active participation.

Together, we are building the future of open and integrity science in Ukraine.
