Webinar “Scientific Data: Concepts, FAIR Principles, Data Repositories”
On March 7, in celebration of International Open Data Day, an online webinar titled “Scientific Data: Concepts, FAIR Principles, Data Repositories” was held for the scientific community.
The keynote speaker, Oleksandr Shevchuk, a leading bibliographer from the Research Sector of the M. Maksymovych Scientific Library, provided an in-depth presentation on the topic and addressed all questions posed by participants.
Main points of the event:
- FAIR data is not simply about “honest” data; rather, it emphasizes qualitative features. The acronym FAIR corresponds to formal criteria for describing data.
- Characteristics of datasets eligible for publication with a DOI.
- Platforms for publishing scientific (research) data and methods to verify their quality.
The webinar was opened by Hanna Tolstanova, Vice-Rector for Research at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Hanna Mykolayivna highlighted the relevance of the topic, particularly in relation to the certification of higher education institutions and the importance of publishing datasets by researchers. She emphasized that collaboration between higher education institutions and libraries is essential for the gradual implementation of the open science concept.
Additional topics discussed during the webinar included:
- The concept of research data, its classifications, and types.
- File formats and naming conventions.
- Tips for locating repositories.
- Choosing appropriate subject archives.
- Types of access under the FAIR data concept.
- Methodological recommendations for managing scientific data.
The event was attended by approximately 150 participants, including representatives from scientific libraries and educational institutions across various regions of Ukraine.
The next webinar, titled “Digital Tools for Assessing the Compliance of Scientific Data with FAIR Principles,” will take place on March 18.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all participants for their engagement, meaningful discussions, and keen interest in this new yet vital topic!
