How work with scientific information is changing: Perplexity AI, Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex

How can you optimize your daily work with scientific literature and data? We introduce three free AI-powered tools that can transform your research workflow: Perplexity AI, Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex. This article is based on the webinar “From Perplexity to OpenAlex: the digital toolkit of the modern researcher,” organized by the State Scientific and Technical Library of Ukraine on June 15, 2026. Webinar speakers: Svitlana Chukanova — Director of the Library of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy; certified Google for Education trainer. Tetiana Yaroshenko — Deputy Director for International Cooperation in Science and Library Affairs at the State Scientific...

Diamond Open Access: combining openness, quality and financial sustainability

Open access to research results is one of the fundamental principles of scientific development. Increasing attention is being paid to the Diamond Open Access (DOA) model, which creates mutually beneficial conditions for both authors and readers. Researchers can publish their work free of charge, while readers gain open and unrestricted access to scholarly publications. At the same time, a logical question arises: if authors do not pay publication fees and readers have free access to articles, how can a journal ensure stable operations? High-quality publishing requires resources for editorial management, technical support, indexing, and archiving.

Open Research Data

Research data are the foundation of modern science and include any information created or collected during scholarly work: texts, tables, images, software code, audio and video materials, survey results, or laboratory research findings. Proper research data management promotes transparency, reproducibility, and reliability of scientific results, helps prevent information loss, and enhances a researcher’s academic reputation. At the same time, data sharing should follow the principle “as open as possible”. This also facilitates the reuse of research results.

Open Science, Open Access & DORA: How Are They Connected?

Open Access is an integral part of the Open Science concept. According to Neuschäfer (2015), Open Science encompasses strategies and procedures that ensure openness, transparency, and reusability of all components of the scientific process. This means that not only scientific publications, but also research data (through open access and research data management), research software, and educational materials (through Open Educational Resources, OER) should be freely accessible under the Open Access model.
